Classic Lifestyle Model

The inspiration for November’s painting is rooted in a missing parcel.  I had the good fortune to collaboration with Kate Stoltz, a popular top model turned fashion designer, based in New York.  Kate sent me a beautiful “Peonies on Marble” Italian scarf to showcase on my social media.  I had a glimpse of the scarf online and was anxiously awaiting its arrival.

This beautiful scarf inspired November’s painting.

I was excited when I opened up my email and received a notification of confirmation of delivery!   The parcel had been delivered ten minutes prior to me reading the email. I rushed to the mailing boxes at our apartment complex. (As a reminder and for clarification, Big Rich and I split our time between our apartment in Los Angeles and our home in Arizona).  I eagerly opened our mailbox, but it was stone cold empty. Whaaattt??  I searched for a key to open the larger parcel compartments, but no key.  I searched every floor of our complex and checked with neighbors who answered the knock at their door. Nobody had seen it.  Discouraged and disappointed, I emailed Kate to let her know that although there was a confirmation of delivery, I did not have the parcel in my hands.  There had been mail thefts around our complex and I was concerned someone had stolen it.

The next day, I waited for our postman to arrive and spoke with him about the missing parcel.   Apparently, he wasn’t on duty the day of delivery, a temporary worker had delivered the mail.  Perhaps the temporary worker had put the parcel in the wrong box and a neighbor was in possession of it? It was the beginning of the weekend and we were heading to Arizona. On Monday I checked with neighbors again, but no solution to the mystery.  I contacted the post office and filed a report of the missing parcel.  I forwarded the information to Kate so she could pursue action from her end.

Another week went by with no resolution.  Then, the following  Sunday evening, I opened our apartment door with trash in hand enroute to drop it in the trash chute.  I glanced down and there was a parcel lying outside our door!  I quickly disposed of the trash and hurriedly returned to investigate the parcel.  The parcel was in a large bubble wrap mailer with the top portion cut open to about the halfway point. The label was addressed to me.  The contents of the mailer had not been disturbed as it took some coaxing to remove the narrow box which was snugly packed inside. I pulled out the box and written in large print was the Kate Stoltz label.  I untied the luxurious black ribbon and gingerly opened the box, removing the beautifully wrapped tissue paper and unveiling the luxurious silk scarf.  Pulling the scarf out of the box, the cascading peony patterns came to life, as if breathing a sigh of relief they had finally found their home.

I paused a moment, taking in the beauty of the huge blossoms adorning the scarf.  I have always loved peonies. They remind me of living in Canada where these beautiful hearty perennial flowers bloom annually in the spring with huge, prolific blossoms.  They bloom early in the season and paint the landscape with a burst of elegance and color. This explosion of beauty after the dormant freeze of winter serves as a great reminder that seemingly dormant stages in our lives serve a purpose, for it is during the dormant stage our bodies and minds are hard at work regrouping in creating a new beginning.

There have been stages in my life where it seemed as if time was wasting away, day after day with no purpose.  I have learned the purpose is sometimes waiting in the silence and it is in this stillness where new creations are secretly at work.  If you’re like me, you’ve experienced stages of dormancy in your life where you feel stuck, doing nothing, having no purpose, at a loss for how to get on to the next stage. Especially now, at midlife, I experience an urgency if I’m still too long, as my biological clock reminds me of my mortality.  Yet, like the peony, the pauses of  “winter” in my life, where I must be uncomfortably still are of equal importance to the times where I flourish and bloom. Many times I have felt as lost as the missing parcel, waiting for the problem to come to a resolution. As I age and grow wisdom, I am learning this gift of time does lead to “more”. As the peony trusts the silence of winter, we too must trust the times in our lives where time seemingly stands still.

With no technical training, still life is not my strong suit, but the the peonies from Kate’s scarf touched me deeply, and I felt drawn to attempt to come up with something. I decided to focus on stylized art, rather than real-life. Stylized in the art world means taking natural forms and altering the color, shapes, lines and features. My peonies definitely have their own unique style, as do each of us in “real life”. Painting number eleven of 2019 is entitled, “The Grace of Peonies”.

      1. Barbie, you write so beautifully. From the very beginning of your story, you brought the Reader along on your journey to find the beautiful scarf. Happily you did receive it and it is indeed stunning, a work of art in itself. How lovely that it reminded you of your beloved Canada.
When I saw your painting, I exclaimed out loud (much to my startled Husband’s surprise) ‘Oh, my goodness, how pretty.’ You have captured the beauty of the flowers on the scarf, and at the same time, you have made it your own.
Barbie, you are extremely talented. Your painting is fresh, alive and so pretty.
I thank you for thinking of me and asking me to read and then see your amazing work.

        1. Hi Maura! Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement and support. I’m so happy you enjoyed reading the story and like the painting. Flowers are something I usually steer away from as they’re quite technical to paint. I hope you are able to look back at some of the blog posts to take a peek at some of my other paintings! Barbie xx

    1. Thank you so much, Elise! I’m so happy you like them!! Thank you for your all your support throughout my journey! xoxo

  1. So glad your scarf reappeared. We are having a terrible time with the post office in the northeast part of El Paso. Daily, my neighbors post ‘lost package’ notices onto our subdivision virtual bulletin board. As Christmas approaches, the situation is sure to get worse.

Your painting reflects the peonies of your scarf perfectly. Their delicate but hardy beauty. I have an easel, paints and started paintings that I hesitate to work on/complete for fear of messing them up. I admire your ability to just paint!! And your philosophy on life. My younger years were so busy that they seem to have flown by and are just a blur, distant memory now. Trying to do something each day in this season of life, that makes a difference. Now to just get back to painting!

    1. Hi Leslie! Thank you for stopping by to read my story and take a peek at the painting. We had a wave of mail thefts earlier in the year and as neighbors we watch out for one another. My next door neighbor picks up any parcel left at my door if I’m not home and vice versa. This particular time the parcel vanished. I am so grateful it turned up! It is so disheartening to think people deliberately steal parcels, especially during the holidays. I am no expert in the painting department but vowed I’d just paint for the sake of painting in 2019. I used to be hesitant and my inner critic prevented me from finishing many pieces. This challenge pushed me to move on to the next creation. Thank you for following my journey. I appreciate all your kind words of encouragement! Enjoy your painting process!! Barbie xo

    1. Thank you, Loretta! I struggle with real life painting, however, by making the peonies “stylized” they became unique. I realized that in “real life” we are our own version of unique “stylized” art! Thank you for reading and commenting! xoxo

  2. I love the scarf and your painting – peonies are such pretty flowers and the colours and ‘softness’ always catch my eye. The scarf looks wonderful on you and I think the extra wait and surprise arrival may have added to the specialness of it – I’m sure it will be part of your wardrobe for many years to come.
Thanks for linking up with us at MLSTL and I’ve shared on my SM ☺️

    1. Hi Leanne The scarf is absolutely beautiful. As you say, the extra wait and surprise arrival make it all the more meaningful. Thank you for sharing on your SM. I am grateful to be a part of MLSTL!

  3. My replies must sound like a broken record, but Wow! What a beautiful story about the “pauses” the “quiet times” and what that is all about.

My wife and life partner once again shows us the way with this heart felt story of her quest to find her “scarf”.

What are we seeking in those quiet times, hmmm? I know when I find it, but feel a bit impatient when it takes a while to appear.

Thank you Barbie for your lovely story and amazing rendition of the beautiful Peony!

  4. I love your posts, Barbie! They are an absolute delight from start to finish! And I am so happy the package turned up unharmed! Beautiful subject for your painting!

  5. I like that you’re doing stylized imagery. I find it more interesting, but then, that’s my abstract art background from my mother. Lovely painting and I enjoyed the post!

    1. Hi Lisa! Thank you for reading! I have taken a peek at your Mom’s work. She is such a talent!

    1. Thank you, Kim! I was so disappointed it may have been lost! I am pleased it all worked out!

  6. You had me on pins and needles waiting to see if you got the scarf!! I adore your analogy of the peony and life!! Beautiful painting!!

    1. Hi Aimee! Thank you for reading and for your kind comments. The scarf truly is beautiful and the peonies seem to come alive when the scarf blows in the wind. Barbie xo
