The Facts are the Stats – Support the Breast Cancer Cause

Thank you to Susan G. Komen for kindly sponsoring this post.

My daughter, Elise and I, support the Susan G. Komen efforts to educate people regarding the facts about breast cancer.

We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer.  Did you know that breast cancer is not just one disease but is rather a family of about 15 different diseases?  I had no idea!  It’s mind boggling! It doesn’t take much thought to start naming friends and family members, young and old who have or who are battling the disease.  Not to mention the ripple effect felt by the loved ones and friends who are within that circle.  While breast cancer affects so many of us, few are actually aware of just how close to home it really hits and this causes me concern.  In partnering with Susan G. Komen it is my intent to help spread the word about the realities of breast cancer by providing fact-based information.

The top line facts speak for themselves.

  • One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cause of cancer death among all women in the United States, second only to lung cancer.
  •  Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death for women 20-59 in the United States.  African-American women are more than 40 percent more likely to die from breast cancer than white women.
  • African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed younger at a later stage and with more aggressive forms of the disease, limiting treatment options.
  •  Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Asian-American and Hispanic women in the United States.
  • Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women in the United States. (2nd leading for Asian American women).
We are on the same team when it comes to taking an actionable step to support the Susan G. Komen beast cancer cause.

I don’t know about you, but I was not aware of these hard facts.  Women of all ages and ethnicity deserve to know what these facts really are. With education being integral to the fight against breast cancer, Susan G. Komen wants to educate the public about this disease and inspire people like you and me to get involved.

Sharing the top line facts and educating one another is a crucial step in saving lives.
